Animals are considered assets to farmers. But we believe it goes beyond that. Most farmers would agree that they care and love the animals that they are raising. Therefore, when the weather gets a bit rough, the animals need shelter. That is why animal shelters are so important. It gives the farm animals a place to hide out from the weather conditions.
- Animal Feeding Lots
In order for animals to get enough nutrition etc. most farmers give their animals feed (even when they are free-range and walk around eating all day). For this reason, farmers need an environment where they can easily replenish food and water buckets. This is where feeding lots come in.
- Greenhouses
Greenhouses are used to cultivate plants in a controlled environment. Therefore, the farmer can control the temperature, amount of natural light and other important growth factors in the greenhouse.
- Storage / Shed / Barn
These buildings are mostly used for storage of a variety of farm equipment and consumables like feed, tractors and other farming necessities.

Do you need a building permit to build on your farm?
The short answer is, yes.
In South Africa, and most other countries, you do need a permit from your local municipality to build on your farm. You can download the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act here.
How do you get a building permit from your municipality?
You can follow these steps to start the process of getting a building permit for your farm structure:
- Make an appointment with the most senior person available at your municipality.
- Establish the requirements for starting your building project (Ensure you are informed of all the by-laws, you can incur fines if these by-laws are not followed.)
- Apply in writing for permission from the local authority. Ensure that you are clear regarding what you intend to do.
- Make necessary adjustments required by the municipality (if there are any)
After following these steps, you should get your building permit. Always follow the law, remember that the government can check up on you with Google Earth and spot any irregularities and illegal buildings on your property.

What building materials can be used to build Farm Buildings?
There are many different building materials that you can use when embarking on a building journey. However, some building materials are more suited for selected applications. We will briefly go through the most common building materials used on farmland.
- Bricks / Cement
Bricks and cement are most commonly used for housing. This is due to the fact that it is durable and strong! Most farmhouses are old and were built many years ago when it was the norm to build with these materials.
However, cement and bricks are also used in more select animal shelters like pig pens due to the fact that it is easier to clean than other materials while still being durable.
- Wood
Wood is a versatile material. Therefore, it can be used all over the farm: Animal Enclosures, houses, sheds and more.
However, it is important to note that wood needs to be treated (CCA Treated) before it can be used on the farm. A failure to invest in treated timber will result in your building/animal shelter rotting and falling apart within 1-3 years.
- Steel
Steel is more expensive than conventional materials but can be used in the support structures for homes and animal shelters. However, it is not a common building material but rather acts as support beams, etc. in key areas of the Agricultural Structure.
