Water scarcity

Wikipedia describes Water Scarcity as the lack of fresh water resources to meet the standard water demand. Water scarcity can also be caused by droughts, lack of rainfall, or pollution. This was listed in 2019 by the World Economic Forum as one of the largest global risks in terms of potential impact over the next decade. Economic water scarcity is caused by a lack of investment in infrastructure or technology to draw water from rivers, aquifers or other water sources, or lack of capacity (lack of knowledge or ability) to satisfy the demand for water.

In South Africa the problem that we face is twofold: Firstly, water infrastructure development has been lacklustre at best to supply the needs of our growing population and has not been keeping up with the growing demand. Secondly, the existing infrastructure has been neglected and not properly maintained which in itself is an unfathomable failure – the actual supply is therefore dwindling, and even if the population growth were to remain static this is creating a crisis in its own right.
These two factors should make one realise that a day zero scenario may become a reality for many South African cities very soon. The question is: do you have a plan in place yet to supply your own water needs so you won’t be wholly reliant on local government water supply? Maybe it is time to realise that we owe it to ourselves and our families to start with a plan before the crises hits. Dig the well before you need the water.

Stay safe during the month of July. We look forward to meeting you on our Aqua Live Streaming Expo’s.
