THE PROBLEM:
OVER 6 MILLION PEOPLE LACK ACCESS TO SAFE, CLEAN WATER IN SOUTH AFRICA
Currently 1 out of 3 schools in South Africa do not have access to safe clean drinking water and clean sanitation. This problem affect the most vulnerable of our society, being school going children aged 6 – 18 years who are most at risk of sickness from waterborne diseases and the danger of unsafe sanitation.
THE SOLUTION
Utilizing water storage tanks provided by Aquadam, the Kusini Water treatment system uses nanotechnology and macadamia nut shells, to form a workable, life giving solution that provides great tasting water. These solutions bring clean, safe drinking water to people in rural, peri-urban and informal settlements throughout the African continent. The Aquadam water tanks which form an integral part of the system. By providing the tanks Aquadam is ensuring that more systems can be rolled out to more schools to address this dire need.
The Filter used removes 99.9999% of disease causing bacteria & parasites from any water source. The Filter is comprised of a mechanical nano-filter with an activated carbon block in the centre. That means it physically separates particles from water by trapping them inside the membrane. Because the filter uses a mechanical filtration process, the Filter remains safe throughout the entire life of the filter.
ACTIVATED CARBON MACADAMIA NUTSHELL FILTER
A two-stage filtration process is used; In addition to the nano-fiber membrane, an actived carbon block made from locally sourced macadamia nut shells is used to absorb chemicals like chlorine and pesticides.
NANO-FIBRE MEMBRANE WITH MACADAMIA NUTSHELL FILTER
The nano-fiber membranes have 0,01micron pores that trap contaminants on one side and release clean water on the other end. The latest technology in membrane production with minimum chemicals is used.
AQUADAM TANK
The Aquadam water tanks form an integral part of the system as both raw water and potable water needs to be stored at some of the sites.
THE KUSINI SMART METER
All our filtration systems are monitored and controlled using a smart water meter that is IOT (Internet of Things) enabled. This allows us to know the state of each site so we can keep water flowing at all times. This device allows us to monitor and operate our systems remotely and carry out maintenance as needed.
What gets filtered.
E-coli, bacteria and things such as dissolved solids are bigger than the pores in our filter. Clean Water is able to pass through, but contaminants larger than 0.01 microns remain trapped, leaving water clean and disease free.
