Steel Water Tank Sizes and Capacities in South Africa
Aquadam builds bolted steel water tanks from 10 000 litres to 13.88 million litres. This page sets out the standard capacity range, typical tank dimensions at each size, and how to choose between our Smart Tank, Dura Tank and Rhino Tank ranges.
Every Aquadam tank is assembled from standard rolled panels, so capacity is set by two variables: the tank diameter and the number of panel courses stacked to make the wall height. That means a required volume can usually be met in more than one shape, and the right shape depends on the space available, the foundation, and the pump or gravity head the system needs.

Which Aquadam range covers which capacity?
Smart Tank
Corrugated Zincalume steel, 4 400 litres to 771 200 litres. Diameters from 2.99 m to 21.69 m and wall heights to 9.02 m. The usual choice for farms, game reserves, lodges and commercial estates.
Dura Tank
Flat panel PosMac® Zn-Al-Mg with an optional AquaGuard liner, from about 4 500 litres to 13.88 million litres. Diameters from 2.96 m to 54.77 m and wall heights to 11.5 m. Suited to large agricultural and commercial storage.
Rhino Tank
Fusion bonded epoxy coated steel engineered to AWWA D103, from about 4 500 litres to 10.75 million litres. Specified where the water is potable, aggressive or where a liner free tank is required for municipal, mining and industrial duty.
For homes and small estates, the factory assembled Home Tank covers the residential end of the range in Chromadek steel.
How to choose a tank size
Municipal and bulk supply. Storage is normally sized on hours of supply at peak demand plus a reserve. See municipal water storage tanks.
Fire protection. The stored volume is set by the required flow rate and duration for the system being protected. See fire protection water tanks.
Mining and industrial. Process water, dust suppression and fire reserves are often combined in one tank with a dedicated fire draw off. See mining and industrial water tanks.
Agriculture and irrigation. Sizing follows the irrigation block, herd size or the roof area available for rainwater capture. See agricultural and irrigation water tanks.
