How to work out the volume you need
Rainwater harvesting
Roof area in square metres multiplied by annual rainfall in millimetres gives litres of runoff per year, before losses. Storage is then sized on how long a dry spell you want to cover, not on the annual total.
Backup and interruption cover
Daily consumption multiplied by the number of days of autonomy you want. A household of four using 600 litres a day needs 4 200 litres for a week.
Fire reserve
Set by the flow rate the system must deliver and the duration it must sustain it, not by consumption. See ASIB approved fire water tanks.
